AKAI BOHSHI
AKAI BOHSHI),
"Red Hat" (Japanese: 赤い帽子, Akai Bōshi) was founded in 1985 by Koji Higuchi, Japan’s first German-style patissier. Like an antique jewelry box, it is filled with classic iron tins brimming with delightful Western-style pastries. The iconic image of a girl in a red Bowler hat, adorned with a bouquet, has become a well-known symbol of happiness and joy.
The first Red Hat brand concept space in Taiwan, is located on Ren'ai Road, in what was originally an old four-story apartment building. With an indoor area of 37 ping (approximately 122.34 square meters) and an outdoor area of 35 ping, the near-equal proportion of indoor to outdoor space naturally sets the stage for a tranquil and serene atmosphere. The interior design team redefined the space’s layout and functionality, by relocating the restroom originally in the center zone, to create a more open and welcoming reception area. They evened out the ground level of the front yard to extend the outdoor greenery. The black-and-white checkered paving at the entrance, leads visitors into the European-inspired ambiance of "Red Hat".

The design team aimed to narrate a story through the space and objects, incorporating elements of color, decorative details, and a sense of historical legacy.
Entering through the velvet-red main wall of the foyer, visitors are greeted by the brand’s iconic image of the "Blessed Happy Girl in a Red Hat," framed in an antique golden frame. This setting evokes the feeling of opening a jewelry box, entering a space imbued with the imagery of the painting. The color scheme of red and white symbolizes nobility, elegance, and blessing in both Western and Japanese cultures. The velvet-red hue gracefully weaves through the space, akin to a ribbon, complementing the Red Hat imagery and creating a layered and innovative visual effect.
In keeping with the refined style of Red Hat’s European pastries, the interior features Versailles-style wood parquet flooring, and the original window frames were lowered to create a wider European-style window grille. The space’s decor draws from the eclectic European style of the Napoleonic III era —— blending Renaissance elements with those from the Louis XV and XVI periods: elegant French paneling, intricate carvings, refined furniture and fireplaces.

Aluminum windows on one side of the central reception area were replaced with open, floor-to-ceiling windows. Adding the touch with greenery, transforms the rear long space into an indoor garden delightfully suitable for gatherings. All the antique pieces with historical significance were carefully selected, such as a Baccarat crystal chandelier and a 19th-century French abbey oak dining table. The aged texture and glow reflect the passage of time, and add depth to the space’s historical narrative.
In the VIP room, French-style seating upholstered with Milan’s Dedar fabric exudes Rococo’s lightness and joy. The wallpaper, depicting a pair of pink and blue peacocks in a forest setting, symbolizes the "birds of a feather" and conveys royal dignity. The decor transforms every girl’s wishes for happiness into an elegant mature adult ritual.

In the Red Hat brand concept space, the functionality and framework, along with the brand’s history and decorative style, have been redefined. The design integrates the old, fragmented residential space with modern elements, creating a harmonious blend of past and present, and reinterpreting the brand’s heritage and future continuity.
